NTPC

National Thermal Power Corporation or NTPC is the biggest power generation company in India. It provides clean, reliable and affordable electricity and plays a crucial role in India's economic progress. NTPC was formed in 1975 and is under the Ministry of power under Government of India. NTPC accounts for nearly 25% of India's total electricity generation and 17% of total installed capacity. It enjoys the maharatna status which gives it the financial autonomy to make investments upto Rs 5,000 crore without prior approval from the government.

NTPC is aggressively transforming itself into a clean energy hub to support India's Net Zero 2070 Climate goals. Over the years, it developed from a thermal power generator into an epicentre of renewable energy, coal mining, power trade, e-mobility, and green hydrogen. NTPC is expanding its non-fossil fuel capacity with a target of adding 60 GW of renewable energy by 2032. This will drastically reduce the greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions in the environment.

Establishment of NTPC

  • The National Thermal Power Corporation was formed in 1975 to facilitate rapid power generation in the country.
  • After Independence, India faced shortage of power, imbalanced development in the various regions, and the increasing need for large scale power generation capacity.
  • NTPC came into being to bridge the shortcomings in terms of planned growth, effective execution of projects, and provision of bulk power to state electricity boards.
  • However, during its early stages of existence, NTPC developed the coal-based thermal power plants so that generation of electricity could be done easily.
  • With time, NTPC became an example when it came to effective project management and was able to explore various other ventures that have been brought about by the changing energy needs in the country.
  • Presently, it is a critical part of India's power structure and is connected to national priorities including electricity for all, industrialization, and grid stability.

Maharatna Status of NTPC

  • NTPC is a Maharatna company which belongs to the list of Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs) that have greater autonomy of operations and finances by the Government of India.
  • The Maharatna designation provides a company with greater independence in decision-making in regard to investments, Joint Ventures (JVs), strategic alliances, and expansions without seeking prior approvals for every move made by the company.
  • NTPC works in a capital intensive industry that requires large investments to add capacity, achieve fuel security, improve technologies, and move towards clean energy.
  • With the Maharatna status, the company can act faster to policy changes that relate to the development of renewable energy, hydrogen projects, and nuclear options.
  • The status will help the company to behave like a strategic infrastructure institution and not just a PSU that is in line with public policies.

Environmental and Sustainability Initiatives

  • The NTPC prioritizes sustainability for a long term plan known as the 'Brighter Plan 2032' which includes decarbonization, water and biodiversity protection, circular economy, health and safety, and community engagement.
  • It focuses on producing electricity in a sustainable manner while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conserving resources, and supporting biodiversity protection.
  • These measures from the environmental perspective include renewable energy development, use of zero liquid discharge process at various stations, rainwater harvesting, ash water recycling, waste management, and tree planting campaigns.
  • NTPC also emphasizes on the measures such as green hydrogen, waste to charcoal scheme, and sustainable transport which indicates that it is gradually moving away from coal-powered electricity generation.

Role in India's Energy security

  • India needs reliable energy in order to be energy secure. NTPC fulfills its obligation since it is the largest power producer in the nation.
  • The company produces reliable electricity which ensures the smooth functioning of the economy, whether for homes, industries, transport, or even utilities.
  • NTPC has an important role in fuel security through coal linkages and exploration of diversified fuel sources, along with the addition of renewable and green hydrogen power generation capacities.
  • Its diversification is essential because India needs to maintain the balance between affordability, availability, and sustainability of its power grid.
